Political instability and the continuing threat of inter-ethnic conflict in South and
Women in the region remain under-represented in parliaments (*please see table), corporate boardrooms, peace negotiations and many other venues where decisions are made. Against this background, UNIFEM works to promote women’s leadership and give them an equal voice in shaping the policies that affect their lives and choices. The programme focuses on peace building, and uses the transition to peace as a unique window of opportunity to introduce gender sensitivity into the reconstruction framework and process.
Effectively, and within the context of 135 global rankings of women in parliament, the majority of CEE countries (with the exception of FYR Macedonia) fall within the 2nd and 3rd groupings (i.e. they fall in ranks 45 to 90, and 90 to 135).
